Hyundai Developing Three Types of Solar Vehicle Technology

All cars require some form of energy to run, whether that is fossil fuel, hydrogen, electricity, or something else. Hyundai is currently working on finding a way to utilize solar power by developing three forms of solar vehicle technology. These technologies will help makes the Hyundai lineup even eco-friendlier in the future.

The solar technology Hyundai is developing will support the vehicle’s main power source, whether it is an internal combustion engine, an electric battery, or a hybrid powertrain. With the addition of solar energy, all three kinds of vehicles will have increased range and improved fuel economy.

The first type of solar technology is a solar roof system, which would be on hybrid models. It uses silicon solar panels mounted onto the vehicle’s roof. This system can charge 30-60 percent of a hybrid’s battery per day, depending on the weather.

For internal combustion engine vehicles, Hyundai is developing a semi-transparent solar roof. These panels would be applied to a panoramic sunroof to maintain transparency while providing power to a supplemental battery system.

The third type of technology is a solar-lid system. This would be used on eco-friendly models like electric cars and uses solar panels mounted on the trunk and roof.

Hyundai has plans to launch its solar vehicle technology after 2019. In the meantime, you can find a lineup of eco-friendly and energy efficient vehicles at Linwood Hyundai, including the new Ioniq hybrid car.
